WHY CHOOSE CLOTH?
The reason to choose cloth diapers are numerous. Aside from the fact that a baby in a cloth diaper is the cutest thing you will ever see, most of them can be put into two categories; Environmental and Health.
The environmental reasons for choosing cloth diapers are endless. I am an environmental engineering technologist by education, so this is a subject dear to my heart.
- The single use disposable diaper has an estimated lifespan between 500-700 years in a landfill. This is only an estimate as they haven’t been around for 500 years for actual statistics to be available.
- The estimated life of a cloth diaper is approximately 100 washes. At that time, it may still be useable as a diaper, or it may be a perfect rag for washing your car.
- Really, I could go on about this at quite some length!
Health reasons to choose cloth are quite numerous as well. I am a mother, so these are the greatest reasons I chose cloth…
- Before the invention of the disposable diaper, only 7% of babies suffered from diaper rash. Since then 78% are reported to have diaper rash.
- The Super Absorbent Polymer used in diapers to absorb moisture is the same substance that has been banned from use in tampons. If it’s not safe for use by adults, why is it safe for infants? There was a time we were told plastic bottles were safe too!
- The Super Absorbent Polymer used in diapers also starts its cycle as a fine powder. If we aren’t supposed to use baby powder on our children’s diaper area anymore, why is this chemical safe for use in the diaper area?
